What’s the Big Deal?

Posted in Blog on / Leave a comment

What’s the big deal? What’s all the biz? Life could be worse than it usually is. Hold your hear up high, so life can look you in the eye. What’s the big deal? Don’t count scars. Things could be worse than they usually are. If you’re feeling crummy, like you could use a little sugar or honey. What’s the big …

Train Wreck

Is your ship sinking? Did you know that’s arsenic you’re drinking? Are you buried in icecaps? Did the bridge you’re on collapse? Did that place you’re in explode? Oh, that’s why we’re singing this ode! Oh! What the heck? Throw in a train wreck! Oh! Oh! What the heck? Throw in a train wreck! Oh! What the heck? Throw in …

My Family Name

Posted in Blog on / Leave a comment

My first try with the chinese calligrpahy brush after so many years! This is my family name. In Mandarin, it’s pronounced “shen”. In Hokkien/Teochew, it’s pronounced as “sim”. I like the alternate meaning of this word. 沈 also means to be (buried) deep in thought. Awesome.

The Beauty of Chinese Art

Posted in Blog on / Leave a comment

The one thing I greatly admire in the two great chinese arts – calligraphy and martial arts – is the skill of applying pressure, and yet be relaxed at the same time. To be forceful and yet relaxed? Doesn’t that seem like a contradiction? Initially, yes. How can one be relaxed, yet be able to apply some amount of force? …

On the Difficulties of Writing

Posted in Blog on / Leave a comment

Writing positive content is not easy. It’s easy to write about one’s problems, negative feelings, worries, fears, etc. That’s why so many people have very emotional blogs. On the other end of the spectrum, there are people whose blogs are filled with nothing but re-blogged contents of other people, and there’s virtually no original content. It’s easy to write when …

Perfect Haven

Posted in Blog on / Leave a comment

I have found the perfect haven that I can flee to for rest and relaxation. The view is perfect, high up in the sky, shaded from the sun. As I lay back, resting my head, before me is the full view of the sky and the clouds in the day, and the moon and the stars in the night. There, …

Sunrise @ East Coast

Posted in Blog on / Leave a comment

Had insomnia the entire night. Couldn’t sleep as much as I tried. So, what do you do when life gives you lemons? You make lemonade out of it! Called two other friends who were awake at 4am, and we shared a cab down to East Coast Park for a wonderful MacDonald’s breakfast out in the open, enjoying the fresh morning …

Wisdom (智)

Posted in Blog on / Leave a comment

Another piece of calligraphy written from my little calligraphy pen! This means wisdom. The full word for it is 智慧. I love wisdom – so much so that I am therefore studying philosophy (love of wisdom). The etymology is quite cool too. 智 has evolved from the following words: 知 (to have knowledge), which is made up of: 矢 (arrow) …

The Challenge

Taxi drivers are, by far, one of the wisest group of people you can ever meet. Sure, every now and then, you’d come across scary weirdos or really obnoxious ones with absolutely no common sense trying to impose their world-saving doctrines on you. But, the bulk of them, with their age, and experience from meeting all kinds of people every …

Love (愛)

Posted in Blog on / 1 Comment

Just wrote this with my brand new calligraphy marker. It’s like a 毛笔 (calligraphy brush) but it’s a marker with a brush-tip. My all-time favourite chinese word is 愛 (love). I don’t like the simplified version. The traditional one is the most meaningful of all. 愛 (love) is made up of three words: 受 (to receive) 心 (the heart) 夊 …

Sublime Sunrise

Posted in Blog on / Leave a comment

There’s nothing more sublime than admiring the beautiful rising of the sun. (Photo taken three years ago from my bedroom window) How often do we make it a point to put down what we’re busy with, stop, take a deep breath, and admire the beautiful sunrise/sunset?
