Fika Swedish Cafe and Bistro – Swedish Meatballs that Tastes Way Better than Ikea’s!

A few days ago, a friend brought The Fiancée and I to a Swedish cafe. It’s called, “Fika Swedish Cafe and Bistro,” and it is located at 257 Beach Road, at the intersection of Arab Street and Beach Road. (There’s another branch at Millenia Walk too)

Neither of us have been there before, but we’ve heard that the food is amazing!

Days before we went, I’ve been dreaming of Swedish meatballs. Gosh… As it is, I loooooove the Swedish meatballs in Ikea! The thought of enjoying meatballs better than Ikea’s just left me drooling. How much more delicious could it be? I had to know!

Obviously, I had to try their Swedish meatballs. How could I not order it after drooling over the thought for days?

Behold the feast! But more importantly, behold the meatballs!

Here’s a close-up of the delicious meatballs!

Sumptuous meatballs! Smells great, tastes great!

Before I say anything about the meatballs, let me first say that I’m using Ikea as a benchmark because it is already irresistibly delicious, and most people would have tasted it before and can thus imagine what this would taste.

The first thing that struck me when they served the meatballs, was that these meatballs did not have the smell of processed food, unlike what you get at Ikea. More than that, these meatballs had a very fragrant aroma. It was the fragrance of the meat and of butter! MMMmmmm…

Moreover, the meat is soft, tender and juicy. It is almost as soft as butter. You can cut right into it with almost no effort!

As for the taste, it is a hundred times better than Ikea’s! If you love Ikea’s meatballs, you must try this! The amazing taste of beef and butter will leave you desiring more. It’s so good, you can’t help but let it sit in your mouth, and allow your tongue to slowly experience the rich flavours of the meat and its juices.

And this is just the meatball without the sauce! When you include the cream sauce and the lingonberry sauce, you find yourself in Swedish paradise! The cream sauce is not as salty as Ikea’s, but it has a rich flavour to it. I personally don’t like Ikea’s lingonberry sauce because it’s very sweet, and I thought that it was representative of all lingonberry sauces. But this sauce opened my mind and changed my world. The sauce is amazing. Not only is it less sweet than Ikea’s, you can really taste the berry flavours. I think Ikea’s one has too much sugar in it, that all I taste is sugar.

So yes, the taste is amazing!

A plate of happiness.

I should say a word about the potatoes. I always thought that boiled potatoes are boring. But boring is not a word I would use to describe the boiled potatoes on my plate. They are amazing! It tastes as if these potatoes were boiled in beef broth or something. When you put a piece of the potato in your mouth, not only do you discover that it is as soft as a mashed potato, but the taste of beef is infused in the potato! Wow!

It is really good! Comparing the potatoes with Ikea, Fika is a definite winner. Ikea’s boiled potatoes are pretty boring. It’s just boiled in water. That’s all. No additional flavours, nothing exciting about it.

So yes, if you love Ikea’s Swedish meatballs, you MUST try Fika’s meatballs. They will blow your mind.

Let’s move on to the other dishes!

Fika Swedish Cafe and Bistro
Here is a sandwich you cannot refuse!

This is another amazing dish! It’s a Swedish rye bread that’s almost like a biscuit, topped with chedder cheese, cucumbers that’s been thinly sliced lengthwise, a whole hard boiled egg, and a salmon caviar cream.

We ordered this because it sounds like fun. And it is a whole lot of fun because The Fiancée and I were busy figuring out how to eat this without dropping anything. There’s just so much food placed on top of the rye bread. Every time I took a bite, I’d end up with salmon caviar cream on my nose!

I’m not sure if I can call this a sandwich, because technically a sandwich needs another piece of bread on top. Whatever it is, this bread dish is very refreshing. I don’t think it’s just because of the cucumber. I think it’s the cheese, cucumber, eggs, and caviar sauce that together form a really nice combination that leaves you feeling very good about yourself at the end of the meal.

I normally don’t like Western breads, especially if they’re toasted, because it’s hard and it leave scratches all over the insides of your mouth. But this rye bread, though very crunchy, did not scratch my mouth. It was overall, greatly enjoyable! I certainly recommend this!

Lastly, we have the smoked salmon salad. My friend ordered this for her meal, but she insisted that we try the salmon because it was too good not to share.

Smoked salmon salad! There’s a piece of rye bread hiding underneath!

The smoked salmon is mind-blowingly awesome! Firstly, the quality of the salmon was very good. Comparable to the ones you get in sashimi at good sushi/sashimi places. More importantly, it wasn’t very salty. I don’t know why most smoked salmons taste terribly salty. This wasn’t one of those over-salted ones.

I think what made the salmon so perfect was the salad sauce that was sprinkled all over the salad. We don’t know what sauce it was, but it transformed the salmon into the star of the show, bringing out all the virtues of this already top notch fish.

Once more, this is another dish you have to try!

The Fiancée and I ended our meals with a lovely cup of hot chocolate!

A lovely cup of hot chocolate on a cold rainy day is the perfect way to complement the meal and the weather.

Even the hot chocolate was amazing. You could discern both the chocolate and vanilla aromas in the cup, but most importantly, it was the right mix and blend of chocolate and vanilla. What made this cup so perfect was the fact that it rained. A cup of hot chocolate on a cold rainy day is the perfect way to complement the meal and the weather.

This was a perfect and amazing meal. If you thought the food at Ikea is amazing, then you will find the food at Fika heavenly. It is like stepping into Swedish culinary paradise!

I will definitely frequent this place, and bring more friends to enjoy the delectable foods!
