He who knows contentment is rich

Here’s another painting Christmas card I made.

painting-7

Made a big mistake with the last word. My hand was trembling quite badly when I was writing this. I’m still not used to writing this small with a brush. Each character is about 1.5cm by 1.5cm.

Anyway… this words come from the Tao Te Ching (道德經), n. 33:

知足者富。

He who knows contentment is rich.

There’s a word play here. It’s not so obvious in Mandarin. In Cantonese, the word for bamboo (竹) has the same sound as the word for contentment (足) – both are pronounced, “zuk”. The word play is that the more you understand about the bamboo (about contentment), the richer you (and/or your life) become.
